Final Piece Anaylsis

For my final piece I decided to use the work of Tony Howell's and combine the ideas of romance, religious windows and patterns together with the outlines of two people. There are no facial details these outlines are meant to represent two people and their religious commitment to one another. I decided to tell a story so am using five images working from the outsides to the finale which is in the centre of my piece.
I have chosen to in fill the outlines with stained glasses windows, there are bright and vibrant colours but I have also used more subtle colours to show calmness and provide a different feel to the outline of the person.
I used Photoshop, cut around the outline of the person and then put the chosen window pattern behind the outline, finally made the background as dark as possible to give a good contrast. And also I cropped them as 12 height x 12 width to make the images looks inspirations, bold and professional.

Developing of Idea piece

I improved all of these images by using a high contrast setting and clear black background. Using high contrast, makes the window appear brighter and bolder. It also focuses the audience’s attention on the shape of the image and therefore enhances the impact of the storytelling.

When I look at this image again, it doesn't look enough like a heart shape. It could almost be any random shape. So I would like to improve this to make a more convincing heart. 

This image shows us that the boy is walking somewhere or going to meet someone.

This image has a one mistake, i.e. the big black lines on the windows inside the human shape. I feel that these are quite distracting for the audience! However, I think this could easily be remedied by removing the black lines to make the shape clearer and more understandable

This image shows us that the boy and the girl are making a promise to one another. I tried to convey this message by asking my subjects to pose with boy covering the girl's hand.

















This image shows us the side of the girl's face indicating that she's looking up or looking at someone who she wants to meet.

This shows us that the girl is blowing a kiss to the boy.




















I experimented with taking photographs of a variety of stained glass windows and trying the different patterns as in fills for the window shape of the person. I then chose my favourite  I prefer the red flower patterned window because it's brighter and more vibrant. It is also the colour of love and luck.

 

Developing Work Contiuned 2

I have improved my developing work. I have taken many photographs and experimented with different subjects and techniques to form my basis for my final piece.
In this image, the boy is kneeling on the floor while holding the flower out to the girl. The girl goes to pick the flower up from the boy. This tells us a story of romance.
During editing, I chose two separate windows i.e. the red windows adorned with flower patterns is more traditionally feminine and represents the girl and the grey, black, blue, green and brown represents the boy. I love the human shapes and feel it will inspire an idea of love and romance in the audience. To improve all these photographs, I will use higher contrast to make the window shapes appear brighter and the background pure black to enhance the window shapes.

This image shows that the boy is walking and as he does so he is reaching out to something or someone.

This image represents the girl dancing or playing. It gives the audience the impression that the girl is playful and full of joy. She's holding her skirt out which shows her femininity.

This image shows the girl and the boy’s hands pressed together making the shape of a heart. It tells us that they falling in the love. I want to inspire awe and emotion in the audience with this image. I feel it is very powerful.

There are 2 different images are original and edited. The edited images got different gestures and what it's look like from original photographs. These images looks passion, creative, bright and colourful.

Developing Techniques

 

 

I tried to use the same techniques as Tony Howell did in this photograph of a stained glass window, i.e. of using 1/10 exposure time and no flash. To achieve this effect. Tony Howell uses f/8, 1/10. ISO 100 and no flash so I experimented with the same techniques.

Developing Work

This is my first piece of development work towards my final piece. I asked the model to stand in front of the window and took many different experimental photographs of her. I asked the model to pose in different ways e.g. praying etc. I was disappointed with the outcome because of the blinds behind the model and the window border around it. So I could definitely improve it. I used Photoshop to fill the shape of the person with fragments of stained glass. I really like
this idea of making my own stained glass window. The photographs I took of stained glass windows were all in Christian churches. I am keen to portray images relating to Islam but using stained glass. I like the notion of religion and storytelling that a stained glass window can convey.

In this set of photographs, I asked the model to pose in front of a wall. I did not use flash as I wanted the background to be defined but the shape of the person to be in shadow. Once again I used Photoshop to cover the shape of the girl with fragments of the photographs of stained glass windows that I had taken earlier.
















I continued to develop and improve my work over several photo-shoots. I took photographs in the studio with a black background. I found this better than using the white background because it makes the window brighter and attraction. I directed the model to make different gestures such as putting their hand in the air, praying, showing the side of the face, making a heart shape with their hands. I used Photoshop to cut out the outline of the person then made the window the shape of a person.

In Photoshop I experimented with different ideas such as making the window in a human shape and using a different patterned stained glass window in the background. I prefer the black background as it really makes the model’s shape stand out.



I was very disappointed with this image. I love the pattern of stained glass but, as you can see, there is a big line of the window frame in the middle of the person. This causes a distraction and spoils the shape of the pose and makes the meaning much less clear. This is something I can improve fairly easily but choosing a different section of stained glass.

This image is not eye-catching! That's because the stonework between the windows causes too much black space, making it very difficult to see what shape the ‘window’ is.

I had tried using a white background in the photography studio. The model made the heart shape with their hands. I prefer the black background because the window shape of the person stands out more and is definitely more eye-catching on the black background. It quickly draws your attention to the main shape of the window. I do however like  different bright patterns of colours in these windows. I feel it makes you  calm and joyful.

I took photographs of the side of the model's  face because it shows you the shape of the human profile. I put a lot of different details of the windows into the human's face on this photograph.

I was disappointed because the background wasn't very black and it's looks rather dirty. I like the solid black lines but they do distract from the overall shape, so once again I can improve on this.

Statement of Intent

I will explore and photograph a variety of windows in different settings. I will use the theme of church windows which links well with Tony Howell's work. To expand my ideas I have chosen to use an outline of a person or persons and then fill that outline in with a variety of windows.
I feel this idea lends itself to telling a story, a romantic story as often people will unite themselves as a couple in a religious setting.
